Lipase is produced by the pancreas in the body. It is a protein-based enzyme which plays a role in the digestion and breakdown of fats in the stomach.
A lipase test measures the level of a protein called lipase in your blood. A doctor will order a lipase test if she suspects that you may have acute pancreatitis (an inflammation of the pancreas that causes abdominal pain) This blood test measures the level of lipase to check for acute pancreatitis
Inform your doctor if you are on any medications or have any underlying medical conditions or allergies before undergoing this test. Fasting of 8 hours is usually recommended before this test.
